Validates the inputs and evaluates what evaluation selects: a direct shell, or the
Ewald sum at the resolved split. N is the number of jet slots: 0 for a value, 1 for
the split derivative of the real-space part, and for all derivatives 6, 10 or 16 in
one, two or three dimensions (k, three shift components, dim Bloch components and
dim * dim lattice-vector components).
