Translations couple degrees up to 2 MAX_DEGREE (special::MAX_ORDER): the
log-factorial cache, the AMOS Bessel orders and the solid-harmonic tables cover that
range. treams has no such limit.
Error messages write the numbers out, with a comment naming the constant: the checks run once per element, and a literal message keeps formatting code out of them.
